The Flute is the smallest of the beginner band instruments, as well as a member of the Woodwind family. Unlike most Woodwind instruments, sound is created by blowing over a tone hole on the head joint. Air vibrates and travels down the flute to make the unique sound. Notes are made by opening and closing different keys on the instrument. The flute is held by balancing the instrument on your thumbs. A flute rental includes a case and a cleaning rod.
Basic flute maintenance is easy. Attach a clean, thin cloth to the cleaning rod included inside of the flute case and swab out the inside of each part of the flute to remove any moisture.
An important thing to always remember: If your child shows an interest in playing an instrument, be sure to show them support! Don't be afraid an instrument is too heavy, too complicated or too big for your child. Let them explore their musical talents, no matter how strange you may think it is. Encouragement is the key to success.
